When Botswana declared a national health emergency due to a severe shortage of essential medicines, the Antwerp diamond community responded swiftly. The Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) organized a fundraising effort among 18 of its member firms to finance life-saving medical supplies and treatments.
This humanitarian initiative is set to benefit more than 35,000 people, including individuals suffering from diabetes and cardiac conditions, by providing access to urgent care for an estimated period of one year.
Among the contributors are prominent industry names like HB Antwerp, Rosy Blue, Malca‑Amit and Bonas Group, alongside other Antwerp-based dealers and polishers.
According to the AWDC’s chairman, this move shows that the diamond sector can also deliver tangible social impact by supporting populations in producer countries through real solidarity.
Shipments of the medicines and supplies are expected early next year, with the aim of easing the ongoing medical crisis and offering relief to the most vulnerable patients.
