Exceptional rough diamonds. A closer look at the TAGS and SODIAM tender that drew industry attention

Diamants bruts d’exception. Retour sur la vente TAGS et SODIAM qui a captivé le marché

A recent tender held in Luanda highlighted the enduring appeal of large natural rough diamonds. Organized by Trans Atlantic Gem Sales in partnership with SODIAM, the sale generated more than fifteen and a half million dollars. The results show that even in a shifting global market, sizeable rough stones remain one of the strongest segments in terms of demand.

The assortment included high quality material sourced from several Angolan mines. Among the lots were seventeen diamonds weighing more than 10.8 carats, totaling close to nine hundred twenty three carats. Fifteen of these stones were sold, representing more than eight hundred sixty five carats in total.

Tenders of this nature attract specialists who understand the value of such goods and who are equipped to optimize their cutting potential. The rarity of these assortments explains the strong competition observed among buyers.

Large rough diamonds offer cutting opportunities that can lead to exceptional polished stones. Their size provides flexibility and potential, which makes them particularly attractive to manufacturers and investors. They are also appreciated for their scarcity. In a market where transparency and provenance have become essential, the clearly identified origin of Angolan goods adds to their appeal.

The stones sold at the tender are now removed from global circulation, reducing the supply of large rough diamonds available to international buyers.

Such a reduction can help maintain pricing strength within specific categories. It may also influence the strategies of other producers, encouraging them to prioritize high quality assortments that meet the expectations of professional buyers.

The Luanda tender is a reminder that the market for rough diamonds is shaped by the availability of large natural stones. Despite fluctuations in other segments, sizeable rough continues to hold strong thanks to its rarity and long term value potential.
