An exceptionally rare diamond has just made auction history. Known as the “Ocean Dream,” the 5.50-carat fancy vivid blue-green diamond sold at Christie’s Geneva for $17.4 million, setting a new world record for a blue-green diamond sold at auction.
Cut in a triangular shape and graded as a type IIa diamond, the Ocean Dream is considered the largest fancy vivid blue-green diamond known to exist today. The gem originated from an 11.70-carat rough diamond discovered in Central Africa during the 1990s.
Presented during Christie’s “Magnificent Jewels” auction in Geneva on May 13, 2026, the stone triggered nearly twenty minutes of intense bidding before being acquired by a private collector. The final result significantly surpassed its high estimate of approximately $12.8 million.
Natural blue-green diamonds are among the rarest gemstones on Earth. Their extraordinary color is formed through highly unusual geological conditions involving both boron and natural radiation exposure over millions of years. According to Christie’s, the “Magnificent Jewels” sale generated more than $66 million in total sales, with strong participation from buyers across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
